Partha Sengupta is a Calcutta-based Indian documentary photographer, born to a refugee family that migrated from East Pakistan. did a Post-Graduate in Finance, an MBA, and a System Design Analyst. Switching from a financial career to photography full-time, he worked in a newspaper for two years. At the beginning of his career, Drik & Oslo University supported him with a short-grant and masterclass program, and Trafficked Women was his first assignment, supported by UNICEF. During the Counter Foto Mentorship Program in Dhaka, Bangladesh, he began exploring work on the post-colonial linguistic identity and issues of the Bengali refugees - The Bloodiest Border, a finalist for Burn Magazine’s Emerging Photographer Award and the Documentary Project Award. He used to assist international media outlets with their assignments in Bangladesh while working at Counter Foto.  Sons of Soil (supported by the Serendipity Arts Foundation), and was nominated for the World Press 6X6 Global Talent Program. His works have been exhibited at Dhaka, Goa, Kozhikode (Sub-Altern Festival), New Delhi (Indian Parliamentary Gallery), Berlin (supported by the German Council of Science and Arts), New York, Montreal, and Cambodia (Angkor Photo Festival), and he was a finalist in the Chennai Photo Biennale and in 2025 at Premaya Arts Foundation. He participated and published works in the VII Amplified Students' Voices, published at Burn Magazine, PIX Magazine, the Polis Project, BBC (UK), and Netra News Sweden, and was awarded a full scholarship to study Documentary Photography and Visual Journalism at the International Center of Photography (ICP), New York. He is a contributor to the book "The Gaze of X-Ray" on custodial torture by security forces, edited by Prof. Sharam Khonsavi of Stockholm University, and on "Matuas " published by Boston University. As his photography career is interrupted many tiems which is on and off due to no work availability, he is involved in odd jobs for sustainability, when photography was secondary to him.

 

He has a special interest in anthropology and is an animal lover and rescuer.
